The Canisius Golden Griffins used a late first half surge, thanks in part to Takal Molson, to cruise to a 70-58 win over the Saint Peter’s Peacocks on Friday night at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Saint Peter’s used balanced scoring in the opening half to enjoy the lead for much of the opening twenty minutes. Samuel Idowu led the visitors with eight points and four rebounds. Nmadi Enechionyia contributed seven points, and Cameron Jones added six points off the bench.

However, late in the first half a pair of fouls called on one play swung the momentum for the Griffs, allowing them to take the lead and they would never look back. Mamadou Ndiaye was called for a block on Isaiah Reese, and after the play ended Davauhnte Turner was assessed a technical foul when a scrum took place. Turner led the Peacocks with twelve points in the loss.

Canisius erased a four point deficit, turning it into a nine point lead in a four minute stretch where they outscored Saint Peter’s 17-4. Molson led all scorers with sixteen points in the opening half. The freshman converted on four of five three-point attempts in the first.

Molson finished the game with twenty-three points, most among all players. It marked the fourth time that the guard recorded 21 points or more, just two shy of his career high 25 in his first career game at UB.

Jermaine Crumpton scored ten of his 14 total points in the second half to help preserve the lead for the Griffs. The forward also contributed three assists and two steals for Canisius. Selvedin Planicic also added eleven points in just 18 minutes of play.

The win is the third of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play for the Griffs. The team is 3-1 in the MAAC, and 10-8 overall on the season, they host Quinnipiac on Sunday at two o’clock.
