Hey, rookie! Time to get to work!

The Bills opened up their rookie minicamp in a unique place.  On the New Era Stadium turf.  In a departure from at least the last two head coaches, and possibly even further back than that, Sean McDermott had his drafted and undrafted rookies, tryout guys, and select first-year players inside the stadium all of them hope to play a real game in this season.

Of the 58 players on the rookie camp roster, chances are slim - at best - most of them will get that far.  But that’s why they’re here.  For that one shot.  And they’ll all have three days to prove to the coaching staff they deserve to stick around.

There’s no doubt some of them will, of course.  Like the team’s six draft picks, led by 1st round cornerback Tre’Davious White and 2nd round wide receiver Zay Jones.

For others, like tryout quarterback Dan Collins (he went to Maine, by the way), it would be a major surprise if he was still wearing his No. 17 red jersey when the team heads to St. John Fisher for training camp.

So what about White and Jones and other players fans will be expecting to see in a couple months?  Here are some observations, pictures, and video from the team’s only media-available rookie session on Friday:

    •    My first two impressions of Tre'Davious White:
1. His feet are always moving, fast
2. He has really foft hands. He doesn't fight the ball as some DBs do.

    •    None of the team’s three defensive players who were elected in the draft - White or linebackers Matt Milano and Tanner Vallejo - took any 11-on-11 team reps from what I saw.  It looked like the coaches wanted to get a good look at the other players they aren’t as familiar with.

    •    Wide receiver Kolby Listenbee, still recovering from hernia surgery last year, was wearing a jersey and watching from the sidelines.  He is listed on the rookie camp roster, but did not participate in any drills.  McDermott sais he's "on schedule" and is pleased with his rehab and "where his mind is."

    •    I don’t think it matters at all, but just a note that Josh Woodrum took the first rep under center at QB. 5th round draft pick Nathan Peterman went after him.  That may very well simply be because McDermott rewarded the player who was on the roster since January before one who was just drafted two weeks ago.

    •    Wide receiver and 2nd round draft pick Zay Jones was only lining up off the line, but on the outside of the formation. I did not see any “twins” formation to see if he's working inside in that set.
